The Department of Design (ID) is part of the Faculty of Architecture and Design. The department has two approximately equal-sized departments: on the Gløshaugen campus in Trondheim, and in Gjøvik.

The Department of Design at has activities at both Gløshaugen in Trondheim and Mustad in Gjøvik.

In Trondheim we focus on industrial design and in Gjøvik we focus on graphic design and web technology. In both places we have expertise in interaction design. We also share research interests, including in health and welfare technology.

In this role, the department is very concerned with collaboration across departments and faculties. The department in Trondheim has, among other things, close collaboration with the architecture community in education and research. The department in Gjøvik has close collaboration with various academic environments at the Department of Computer Technology and Informatics (IDI) at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, which also has a department in Gjøvik.

Our stand at Designers' Saturday 2025 attempts to show the full breadth of the department's potential - through 9 projects that include furniture design, lighting, textiles and interactive experiences.
