Aula was founded in 2017 by anthropologist Marie Sagen and furniture designer and interior architect Sara Gretteberg. Since then, the Studio has established itself in Oslo, and both launched and led the production of several designs under their own brand. Local production combined with materials of high quality are essential in Aula’s production. Beyond product design, the studio’s work extends within a wide range of the design field, with projects within traditional crafts, interior architecture and set design. The common denominator is implementing an anthropological mindset in the field of design. By using anthropology as a method and tool in the design process, the Studio is able to come closer to their main goal – to uncover and understand how people shape and are shaped by our surroundings, from the homes we live in, to the objects we choose and the art we like.

Since 2021 the design studio has delved into the cultural history of ornamentation, specifically looking at how to implement ornaments in a contemporary context. The project has resulted in the release of various ornamented objects.
